A 30 ft. steel flag pole seemed like the perfect thing to put the new wind mill atop. Except that it is heavy. Really heavy.
Our friends, always the good sports, were excited to help and said, "It'll be like a barn raising!" when I called them to come over.
Up it goes!
M-10's job was to screw in the bolts to stabilize it.
Wind power! After all of that work (and it really was a lot of work. That thing was incredibly heavy!) it turns out this is just an experiment to see if it will work. In the future, there will be a larger windmill in the field that will hopefully supply our home with electricity! This experimental windmill is generating just enough power to run a hair dryer. This is the start of our off grid homesteading experiment. We have big dreams of wind power, solar power, well water and live stock. Fun!

All of that for a hairdryer? LOL Mark has always wanted a windmill. Seriously. He thinks it would be neat and practical. :)
Now that it's been up for a few months, how's it going? Any plans to expand so you can run your hair dryer and an electric toothbrush anytime soon? :D
Haha Linda! Well, it ran a laptop and christmas lights for quite a while! We don't have it generating anything right now, (took the Christmas lights down and gave the laptop to someone) but it's still spinning! We have plans to put three up. It wouldn't supply all of our power, but it would be great back up and cut costs. We want to get a well first and are looking into that. (It's such a gamble!)
