February Things To Remember

I love traditions and holidays. One year I found the book Mrs. Sharp's Traditions on sale and bought a bunch to give out to my family and friends. I still have a couple left and give them to people I think might enjoy the sweet sentimentality of the book. I brought one and gave it away at a Relief Society enrichment "Favorite Things" night, too.
I like to celebrate holidays and seasons but not in an extravagant way. We have a little cupboard in our entryway that we call the "decoration table" that I try to keep dressed in the season. It is part Waldorf nature table and part holiday/season decor. I love that little pine cupboard. We found it at Ikea 15 years ago on a display. There wasn't another one in the store. If I remember correctly it didn't even have a price so we just offered something. I have no idea what. When we moved for the first time after L-14 was born the drawer flew out of it on the freeway and we never repaired it. I've always thought about putting a sheet of punched tin over the space, but never got passed the thinking about it stage.
I like making food with either seasonal produce or things that remind me of the season (cozy snacks, etc.), doing seasonal crafts with the kids, and having baskets filled with books appropriate to the season and holidays. I'm not very accomplished with the cooking or crafting (I'm very good at reading!), but I hope above all else, I am creating family memories.

Here are some February holidays that I would like to acknowledge this year:

Groundhog Day and Candlemas (Today! Feb. 2) Craft: We'll make tissue paper luminaries this afternoon~

Chinese New Year (Feb. 10 The Year of the Tiger) We'll make a Chinese lantern craft I bought from Magic Cabin on sale. We'll have Chinese food for lunch or dinner~

President's Day (Feb. 15) Some sort of cherry dessert in honor of George. I found all natural cherry pie filling online I might buy, but it's a little pricey~

Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras (Feb. 16) It's traditional to have a pancake dinner on this night~

Boy Scout Sunday (Feb. 14) The boys will wear their scout uniforms to church~

Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) We always go way overboard with homemade valentines and the house is covered with a fine layer of glitter for weeks~

M-7's Birthday (Feb. 26)

Purim (Feb. 28) This is a Jewish holiday I have been dying to celebrate. It involves the story of Esther and lots of fun hissing at Haman's name~

Our Anniversary (Feb.28) 18 years!

I don't take the time to comment very often, but I so love your blog. Thank you for letting me have a little peak into your family's life. It's very encouraging.
