Literature Unit Study~ M-10 has been reading quite a bit, as usual. She had a Little House on the Prairie/Laura Ingalls Wilder unit study. We have lots of supplemental books that are fun to look at and explore. We especially like the cook books.
She read the books based on Laura's mother, Caroline, Grandmother, Charlotte, and Great Grandmother, Martha. She has read the Caroline years before, but the the other books were new to her. She really liked piecing the genealogy together and looking at time lines in the supplemental books. I also got her the rest of the Rose Years books. These stories are about Laura and Almonzo's daughter, Rose. M-10 really liked the first few books, but then things really took a turn. M-10 was pretty upset with Rose and told me, "Rose is making rotten choices!" Basically, Rose chooses not to marry her sweetheart, to go off to work and be a "Bachelor Girl". M-10 was NOT happy with Rose.
History~ M-10 really likes reading about history and great men and women. She covered the Revolutionary time period as well as the Civil War time. A little Einstein never hurt anyone, either.
Literature for Literature's Sake~Her favorites are The Penderwicks (the first book is not shown), and hands down The Indian in the Cupboard. The books in the basket are re-reads: Box Car Children, American Girl books, Trumpet of the Swan, a couple of Magic Tree House. I don't have them pictured, but she has also been pulling out mass quantities of picture books. Who doesn't love a beautiful picture book with rich language?
Even though M-10 has a Kindle, she prefers real books. She did read a few on her device, though: The Tale of Despereaux, Ralph S. Mouse, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
