Farm Friday~ Friend or Foe?

The chickens get some supervised free range time every day. We put up a make shift fence and they love to peck around and take dust baths.

They are a lot of fun to watch and will eat feed out of our hand.

They like to be in the shade of the little cherry tree and jump up to eat the leaves.

Henry loves to watch the chickens from his favorite spot under the coop. The chickens aren't scared of him and they come and say hello.

We have let him know that the chickens aren't food, but we still worry.  They literally touch nose to beak sometimes and Henry has been known to occasionally lick a chicken.

A few times a couple of chickens flew over the fence and Henry chased them around. I suppose if he really wanted to do harm he would have, because he is an excellent hunter and catches birds, gophers and moles all the time. We'll continue to train him and will probably put the chickens in the field with the llamas for protection when they are older.
Update:  Poor Henry couldn't resist the temptation and did end up killing one of the yellow chickens.  We were all sad.  We started a new training method that was the only effective way in teaching him to stay away from our chickens and out of the field.  He attacked our female turkey, too, and de-feathered most of her back (poor baby), so we had to do something.  Luckily, he is a quick student (given the right consequences) and has been a good boy. (We had to get an electric fence and shock collar.  We set it pretty low and only had to use it a couple of times.  Drastic times need drastic measures!)
