Weekly Wrap Up~ {Second Week of October}

M-9~
Poetry and Math~ Still going! We are now on to winter poems which feels a little funny. We *almost* started another poetry book that had more autumn poems, but decided we wanted to stick with Bob. Almost done with Cats in the Fred books. Only one more book in the elementary series! Good thing another four books will soon be released! We timed it perfectly.
Legends~All filled up with Native American stories for now. Five in a Row~ Henry and the Castaway~ Social Studies: Explorers. It happened to be Columbus Day when we started. We read Leif the Lucky and discussed other explorers. Language Arts: Allusion in literature. Went on a bunny trail of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson, all castaways. Sang the Gilligan's Island song ("like Robinson Crusoe, as primitive as can be..." and ordered the Disney Swiss Family Robinson movie form Netflix.

Art Appreciation: Facial Expressions and mixed medium in the book, Science: Survival Skills and River Currents.

Science~ Some review of deciduous trees and conifers. These are our versions of worksheets done in large bound unlined paper books. We also enjoyed How Do Apples Grow? and went around to our different plants looking at stamens and pistils. We will review it pictorially in a couple weeks, most likely, in our science main lesson books.

Reading~ Like me, M-9 likes to re-read books. I'm not including those in the picture. :)

C-14 and P-12 Assignment books~ I found these lesson plan books in the dollar bin at Target. They look like they are for a pre-school teacher but they are just what I needed for the boys! I write down their assignments for their commonwealth classes so they are all in one spot. It's working very nicely!

P-12~

Shakespeare~Sixteen original, unabridged works of William Shakespeare down, one to go!! P-12 did an outstanding job on an oral report of God, Religion, and Superstition. His class gave him great scores and he came home a happy (and relieved) camper.

Key of Liberty~ {Constitution and History} P-12 completed the Heritage Award to earn his Key in the class. They earn ribbons through out the class to tie on the keys and one of the ribbons is to memorize the Ten Commandments. This is a great book I bought years ago to help with that. P-12 has been reading the required books and participating in colloquiums, debates and simulations.

C-14~

Shakespeare and Exploring Genius~ C-14 is loving his class on the time period between the American Revolution and the Civil War. It's focus is on inventors, explorers and pioneers that paved the way for others. He is also doing well with Shakespeare and has improved so much in his writing as he completes his opinion papers. He also is a big Life of Fred fan and has been working through this Algebra and Biology book at night in bed.

C-14 spends a lot of his time reading how things work and then creating things with his hands. We had this old edition of The Way Things Work that he has read from cover to cover. For his birthday he received The New Way Things Work and he has really enjoyed the new information as well as comparing the two books. Ask him how just about anything works and he'll tell you. In detail.

L-15~

L-15 was very glad I was going to include her in this post! She has done a lot so far and I'm proud of her great attitude as she works with other mentors and wrestles with her papers. There are only two grades for her writing assignments: A or DA. A is acceptable and DA is Do Again. She is learning that DA's are helping her to not only improve her writing but to have patience with herself in the writing process.  While the boy's practice scholar projects are all about Inititive, the pendulum as swung back to Submission for L-15 in this Aprrentice Scholar class.
