M-8 has been taking piano lessons for almost a year. She started out with great gusto and enthusiasm, but as the months wore on, the apple that is daily practice lost its shine. I think I saw this idea in Family Fun magazine years ago and thought it might work. It's very simple. When she starts her practice, I light her candle. When she is done, she blows it out. When the candle burns all the way down, we go to Cold Stone. It looks like it takes 2 weeks worth of 20 minute practice sessions. It looks like a win win to me. She is excited about practicing again and I get to have a date with my littlest girl.

Thanks for the great idea. We just got one for a certain flame-loving piano student at our house.
Ummm...brilliant! My son is counting down the days until he can quit playing. Not sure we gave him an actual date.
