*Social Studies~ This week we learned about cold Northern Canada and the vast Tundra. L found Canada on the globe without any help from Mom! We discussed Canada being part of North America. We looked at pictures of Canada and the Tundra in supplemental library books and discussed permafrost and the effect on plant and tree growth. Because the ground is frozen under the soil, the roots can't go deep down, so things don't grow very tall! We made a salt dough tundra landscape and put grass and scrubby weeds for the low growing trees. We also discussed Inuit culture and looked in the book Children Just Like Me. Great day!
*Art~ VLFT uses Pointillism in it's illustrations. We discussed that pointillism is a painting technique that uses lots of dots to make a picture. We printed out a pointillist painting (Georges-Pierre Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte) and discussed the artist and his work. We each made a painting using pointillism as the technique with Q-tips dipped in paint. While looking at the illustrations in the book Very Last First Time, we also talked about details in illustrations. We spent lots of time looking for hidden pictures in the illustrations and finding traditional Inuit items as well as modern items.

*Science~ (Health) Today we had a great time learning about the weather and dressing appropriately. We played the dress up game! Everyone had their own laundry basket filled with different articles of clothing for different seasons/climates. I would ask, "You live in Northern Canada and you're going to collect mussels on the bottom of the seabed. What are you going to wear?" The kids would scramble to find the appropriate clothing and put it on. We also dressed for a hot steamy jungle, a rainy day, a walk on a crisp autumn afternoon, a summer day at the park, gardening on a spring day, going to church, going to a ball, and a Halloween party. We learned about frostbite and overheating.

*Language Arts~ Very Last First Time uses lots of action words. We had fun acting them all out as they happened in the story and discussing the vocabulary words. L also did a wonderful job narrating the story in her own words. She used many of the vocabulary words and appropriate names. Everything was in sequential order with lots of expression. By using lots of blankets and quilts draped over everything, I turned the kid's bedroom into the bottom of the ocean! The kids had a great time re-enacting the story by crawling around collecting mussels (specific colors of Duplo blocks) into their mussel pans (pie tins).
Field Trip~ We discussed the tides, tide pools and sea creatures so we went to the beach to watch the tide! We collected many different shells that we were able to identify with our field guide from the library. The very first shell L found was a mussel shell!
We loved this book!
