This book was out of print at the time we studied it. We had to inter library loan it and when we got the call that it was in L was so excited! We had read/looked at an online version so we were familiar with it, but there is nothing like holding the real thing! L excitedly said, "The library found Mark!" (The main character based on the author) I thought it was cute so shared it with the Five in a Row website forum. To my surprise, the author posted back to me, "Just wanted to say hello and I enjoyed your story!" So sweet! of course, L was even more excited that the author (and illustrator) Mark Shasha, wrote to her!
Social Studies~ We read the book and found New England on the map puzzle. We discussed responsibility and made a list of the responsibilities the main character had in the story.
Language Arts~ Discussed having our own restaurant and developing a menu.
Science~ Looked at lots of pictures of Moonjellies on the internet and in nature books and magazines. Also discussed other sea creatures and sorted and classified sea shells. Made shell imprints in clay. Made a silly jellyfish craft with a baggy and crepe paper.
Field Trip~ Scripps Aquarium to say hi to the Moonjellies!
