One of the chicks our Buff hatched out last summer turned out to be a rooster. He was born with just one eye and he was a little skittish because of his limited vision. He wasn't a mean guy, though, like our last rooster and never tried to attack us. Unfortunately, he was taking out his aggressions on the hens and becoming very violent with them. We believed he killed one of our pretty little Chinese Cochins (we thought it was a hawk, but now know better) and I found him trying to kill his poor surrogate mother, Fat Yellow-the Buff. Finding her with blood on her face and completely traumatized, trying to hide from him in the dog kennel, was the last straw. Nope, we didn't eat him, although I wanted to! We needed to get rid of him too quickly to figure out how to do that, so we donated him to the feed store. It's very fun to hear a rooster crowing in your own back yard, but we will make do with the neighbor's roosters for now. Good bye One Eyed Jack!
